The funny people I know make a lot of really awful jokes. Gratuitously filthy, overelaborate, overderivative. Miscellaneous misjudgments; so many ways to fail. Humor just has a really high failure rate. This makes sense, since humor requires revolving its half-strategically, half-whimsically selected subjects around in unexpected ways: inefficient combinatorial schemes for freaky fringe cases. I’m wondering if blog writing is like this and hoping so in the shadow of my latest post, which I’m feeling twitchy and unsatisfied about. I’m hoping so, and thinking it’s not an unreasonable hope.
